HOME / Basic composition of double-glass solar modules - CAPTURED ENERGY SOLAR (PTY) LTDIn the ever-evolving world of photovoltaic technology, double glass solar modules are emerging as a game-changer. By encapsulating solar cells between two layers of glass, these modules offer unparalleled durability and efficiency. But what exactly sets them apart? What are double glass solar modules?
Glass-glass PV modules, also known as double glass solar panels, are photovoltaic modules encapsulated with tempered glass on both the front and back sides. Compared to traditional glass-backsheet modules, they offer greater durability and environmental resistance.
Double-glass PV modules are emerging as a technology which can deliver excellent performance and excellent durability at a competitive cost. In this paper a glass–glass module technology that uses liquid silicone encapsulation is described. The combination of the glass–glass structure and silicone is shown to lead to exceptional durability.
In contrast, double glass modules replace the polymer layer with another glass sheet, creating a robust sandwich structure. At IBC SOLAR, we use 2,0 mm x 2,0 mm glass layers, whereas some other market offerings use thinner 1,6 mm x 1,6 mm layers. This ensures greater durability and longevity.
Glass-Glass module designs are an old technology that utilises a glass layer on the back of modules in place of traditional polymer backsheets. They were heavy and expensive allowing for the

Double glass solar panels are primarily composed of 1. Two layers of tempered glass, 2. Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) encapsulant, 3. High-efficiency solar cells
The thickness of the double-glass PV module glass has now dropped from 2.5mm to 2.0mm, and it is expected to drop to 1.6mm in the future. As the glass thickness of double-glass photovoltaic modules
